WITH / Arthur Samet
In 2000, Arthur stepped into the CEO role, succeeding his father Norman. Under his leadership, we’ve diversified our portfolio beyond our commercial industrial roots and into sectors like healthcare, technology, education, municipal and multi-family. But what does a typical weekend look like for Arthur? What might you be surprised to learn about him? Check it out.
Where DID YOU GROW UP?
In High Point, NC and moved to Greensboro in the 10th grade.
What would people be most surprised to learn about you?
I always carry a lucky frog in my pocket.
What was your first job in construction, and what do you remember most about it?
I was a field laborer on the Convetec job across the street from our current Greensboro office. My first week I dug three flagpole holes by hand and filled 2 of them back in.
Describe your perfect weekend
I enjoy spending time outdoors with family and friends—whether kiteboarding or boating on the water, snow skiing, walking the dogs, going for a run, or recently, learning to play golf.
What's one thing you can't start your day without?
Cup of coffee and reading the news.
How would you describe your leadership style?
This one is hard for me to answer. I think I am trusting and willing to allow people to approach their job with autonomy and responsibility to achieve results the best way for them vs micro managing their progress.
What excites you most about Samet's future?
Seeing the growth in our people and watching them lead us into new opportunities and projects.
Give us two truths and lie!
— Pizza delivery was my first job out of college
— I read at least 2 books a month
— I learned to waterski with I was 4 years old.
Thanks for sharing, Arthur. So curious about that lucky frog. Stay tuned for next month’s featured leader!
